Writer’s block is ‘a psychological inhibition preventing a writer from proceeding with a piece’ so said my dictionary. The English translation is ‘the condition of being unable to think of what to write.’
When I get writer’s block, it’s usually caused by self-doubt, but there are lots of reasons why you may have writer’s block. It can be caused by fear, or maybe it’s not the right time in your life to start a new project, or maybe you have a lack of motivation or inspiration, etc. But whatever the cause, they all keep you from crossing that finish line.
So how do we prevent this nightmare from happening? well, unfortunately, there is no way to stop it completely, at least not that I know of, but there are plenty of ways to overcome it.
I love the idea of prompts! And they really help get your mojo back. But I have always been uncomfortable with using other people’s ideas. If you have the same problem I recommend two things:
no.2: Writing about whatever random thing that comes to your mind.
And remember, don’t overthink it, just put some words down on paper.
- Play an instrument
I have gotten some amazing ideas while playing my instruments. But if you don’t play any instruments try listening to instrumental music instead. (Film scores composed by John Willams is my personal favorite)
- Throw a fit
This surprisingly helps.
- Take a break
This doesn’t work so well for me, but it may be exactly what you need. Take a break, watch Star Wars, refresh your creativity. This might take an hour or it might take a week but it works;)
Thanks for reading! I hope this helps you!
Best wishes, Sarah.
